Becoming a CPA

July 31st, 2011

Should becoming a CPA be one of your goals, then you need to have an understanding of what you will need to go through before you can enter this profession. One of the main requirements for those on the road to becoming a CPA is to take a college course in accounting or accountancy. However, according to students who have taken these courses, they are one of the most difficult subjects, with passing rates that are quite low and a great number of students abandoning the program. However, it is not something impossible to accomplish. Here is some advice on how you can become a CPA.

The acronym CPA stands for Certified Public Accountant. While this term is mostly used in the United States, it is also is use in certain other countries to denote accountants that have gone through rigorous qualification requirements. Anyone who wishes to call themselves a CPA will need to pass the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Exam. However, passing the exam is not the only requirement for someone who wants to work as a CPA. Candidates will need to meet some requirements in terms of work experience or education in order to be given the right to fully practice their profession. Those who have passed the exam but have not yet met all requirements can generally exercise some limited functions with regards to accounting, but they cannot, by themselves, work as a CPA until they have met them. Examples of things that only licensed CPAs can do in most states. include giving an attestation on financial audit reports.

Other Designations

Certain states have various levels of certification for accountants, which include levels that are lower than the CPA. The most common of such certifications is the PA or “Public Accountant”. Around 10 different states give this level of certification. Of course, as this is a lower level, the requirements for becoming a PA are also lower than those for becoming a CPA.

The CPA Examination Process

For those who wish to have the title of CPA in the United States, the main requirement is the passing of the Uniform CPA Exam, which is an examination established by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. However, it is up to the licensing authorities in each state, called the State Boards of Accountancy to set rules as to who would be qualified to sit on the Uniform CPA Exam. The general requirements are the completion of a Bachelor’s Degree which includes a certain number of credits in accounting or business, plus an additional 1 year study period. The details of the requirements will vary among individual states.

More Details On Qualifications

While the CPA exam is standardized nationwide, the licensing and certification details will vary depending on which state you live in. Certain states will require that candidates first successfully pass the uniform CPA examination and then gain an appropriate amount of experience in the field of accounting before they are able to get their CPA certification. In certain states, it is possible for the individual to have this work experience requirement waived if he or she meets certain educational requirements that exceed the minimum demanded to take the exam.
